White List vs. Black List
There are two basic ways to make an
internet experience "Kosher."
Black List: We start with the entire
Internet being available. The filtering systems then filter out any sites that
have objectionable material. At the lowest level of filtering, only obviously
objectionable sites are "blacklisted." You then have the option of choosing from
various levels of blacklisting - various levels of what you consider
"objectionable." Click here to see the various,
pre-set, blacklisting filtering levels.
Advantage: Most of the Internet is
available. If you aren't looking for objectionable material, your internet
experience will be "normal." This is full internet access on which access
is restricted to certain sites.
Disadvantage: There is no method of
providing a 100% block rate on objectionable material that is part of the
ever-changing, ever-growing Internet. Among the various types of material (text,
image, sound, video) constantly growing on the internet, and the various methods
of providing such material over the Internet, some type of some material does have a
chance of getting though blocking methodologies. Technology moves forward
rapidly, websites are created every second, people add things in different
ways, etc. So in this sea of perpetual change, even under an active filter, someone could possibly gain
access to something objectionable. It is simply impossible to filter every drop
of the ever-growing Internet ocean.
White List: We start with no
Internet access. We then select only certain, specific, Kosher sites that the
user can access. The specific selection and quantity of sites included in this
white list depends on the audience for which this list is created. There can be
white lists designed for use by children, adults, business, entertainment,
Ultra-Orthodox Jews, etc.
Advantage: There are no surprises. You know
every site to which access is available. Any site not listed on the WhiteList is
inaccessible.
Disadvantage: This is not full-fledged
internet access. This is access to a select group of sites from the Internet.
Based on the above, we don't suggest using
blacklist filtering for environments
in which users will possibly seek out
objectionable material, or where even the slightest chance of material
slip-through is dangerous. A children's white list is ideal for environments
where parents have interest in their children having access only to
children-related internet sites. Alternatively, for business environments, where
full access to major vendors, commerce-related images, and online commerce is
necessary, we suggest blacklist filtering.
As with any product in which there exists
some level of danger, always be responsible.
