What's Email?
Email is "electronic mail." - one of
the most popular used services on the Internet. It enables messages to be
transferred from an individual to another individual or from an individual to a
group of people. Documents (and audio, video, pictures etc.) can be "attached"
to email messages and sent along with the message. Email can be sent to any
other email "box" in the world. In seconds.
Generally, there are two ways to send
and receive email –
E-mail client (a Mail User
Agent (MUA)): A computer program (like Microsoft Outlook Express) designed
specifically for the purpose of receiving, reading, composing and sending
e-mail.
Webmail: A Web application
(webapp) software that uses the Web browser, such as Microsoft’s Internet
Explorer, to use and access email
An email message consists of several
components -
Header, which consists of
fields, usually including at least the following:
From: The e-mail
address from where the message was sent (and might also include the name
of the sender of the message).
To: The e-mail address
to where it was sent (and might also include the name of the receiver of
the message).
Subject: A brief
summary of the contents of the message.
Date: The time and date
the message was originally sent.
Other common header fields
might include:
Cc: carbon copy:
Address to where this message was also sent.
Some e-mail programs offer a "Bcc"
(Blind carbon copy) option which is used to send a message to additional
recipient(s), but those recipients in the “bcc” field will not be
visible to any recipient
Body or the message itself.
Attachment(s): Documents
(and/or audio, video, pictures etc.) can be "attached" to email messages and
sent along with the message.
